CREATING OPPORTUNITIES IN THE TRADESThe construction industry offers the typeof long-term, livable wage jobs that, ifconnected with the <strong>Black</strong> community, couldhelp address racial inequities in employmentand overall household income.A recent report, published by the <strong>Oregon</strong>Bureau of Labor and Industries, confirmedthat we can do more to support our <strong>Black</strong>apprentices.Termination during theprobationary periodwas more likely for all<strong>Black</strong> apprenticescompared toWhite males30.24%12.42%21.51% of <strong>Black</strong>s completed their apprenticeships, and theirtermination rate was an astonishing78.49%In comparison, White male participants had a completion rate of54.54% and a termination rate of just 45.4% 9We can do better. We need to open up more opportunities to quality construction careersand other union jobs and create alliances between community benefits and project laboragreements and hiring targets.96
