One indicator of infecundity is the onset ofmenopause. In the context of the available survey data, womenare considered menopausal if they are neither pregnant norpostpartum amenorrhoeic, but have not had a menstrual periodin the six months preceding the survey. The prevalence ofmenopause increases with age, typically from around age 30.Table 6.13 presents the indicator for women age 30-49,which ranges from 4 percent for women age 30-34 to 58 percentfor women age 48-49. FERTILITY PREFERENCES 7Dudu DlaminiThe 2006-07 Swaziland DHS included several questions designed to ascertain women’sfertility preferences. Women who were either not pregnant or unsure about their status were asked thequestion: “Would you like to have a (another) child or would you prefer not to have any (more)children?” A different question was posed for women who were pregnant at the time of the survey.Pregnant women were asked: “After the child you are expecting, would you like to have another childor would you prefer not to have any more children?” The women who indicated that they wantedanother child were asked how long they would like to wait before the birth of the next child. Finally,women were asked the total number of children they would like to have, if they were to startchildbearing afresh.Given that men play a vital role in the realisation of reproductive goals, the 2006-07 SDHSalso included questions that elicited information from men on fertility preferences.The fertility preferences questions in the SDHS are hypothetical and, thus, respondents’answers have to be interpreted with some caution. Nevertheless, the data on fertility preferences havebeen shown to be a useful indicator of the direction that future fertility may take. In combination withdata on contraceptive use, data on fertility preferences also allow estimation of the need for familyplanning, both for spacing and limiting births.7.1 DESIRE FOR MORE CHILDRENData on the desire for more children can indicate the direction of future reproductivebehaviour, provided that the required family planning services that assist in the realisation of fertilitypreferences are available, affordable, and accessible. Table 7.1 presents the distribution of currentlymarried women and men age 15-49 by the desire for more children according to the number of livingchildren. The results indicate that the majority of both women and men in Swaziland want to delay orlimit the next birth. Women are more likely than men to prefer to limit births (68 percent and 52percent, respectively).Table 7.1 shows that the desire for more children is directly related to the number of livingchildren a woman or man has. Eighty-two percent of married women who have no children want tohave a child, with 57 percent desiring to do so soon. In contrast only 14 percent of women whoalready had four children expressed a desire for more, and this proportion decreases to two percentamongst women with six or more children.The proportion of men desiring more children is significantly higher at all birth orders ascompared with women. For example, among the SDHS respondents with two children, more than halfof men want another child compared with 31 percent of women.Fertility Preferences | 97
