13.11.9 HIV Testing and Counselling among Young PeopleKnowledge of one’s own HIV sero-status can motivate a person to practice safe sexual behaviourto avoid transmitting the virus to others. Table 13.25 shows for young women and young men age 15-24who had sexual intercourse in the past 12 months, the percentage who reported having an HIV test in thepast 12 months and received the results of the test. Young women are about four times as likely as youngmen to have been tested for HIV (28 percent and 7 percent, respectively). While there are no substantialdifferences in HIV testing levels by most background characteristics, older youth and those who haveever been married are more likely than other youth to have been tested for HIV.Table 13.25 Recent HIV tests among youthAmong young women and young men age 15-24 who have had sexual intercourse in thepast 12 months, the percentage who have had an HIV test in the past 12 months andreceived the results of the test, by background characteristics, Swaziland 2006-07BackgroundcharacteristicWomenPercentage whohave been testedfor HIV andreceived resultsin the past12 monthsNumber ofwomenMenPercentage whohave been testedfor HIV andreceived resultsin the past12 monthsNumber ofmenAge15-19 22.5 451 4.3 19615-17 18.3 179 1.9 6518-19 25.3 272 5.4 13120-24 30.7 834 7.3 55920-22 31.7 517 5.0 34123-24 29.0 317 10.9 218Marital statusNever married 26.4 837 5.8 677Ever married 30.6 447 13.2 78Knows condom source 1Yes 28.1 1,166 6.4 718No 25.2 119 (8.8) 37ResidenceUrban 27.6 324 5.4 199Rural 27.9 960 6.9 556RegionHhohho 23.1 322 3.7 169Manzini 30.7 416 7.9 268Shiselweni 32.3 269 6.3 158Lubombo 24.8 278 7.5 160EducationNo education 21.3 73 (6.6) 36Lower primary 16.7 93 8.3 95Higher primary 28.9 348 5.0 173Secondary 26.2 493 3.5 242High school 35.0 240 10.5 179Tertiary (33.3) 36 (10.3) 30Wealth quintileLowest 25.9 221 5.8 117Second 26.5 254 9.4 117Middle 29.3 261 6.5 171Fourth 30.8 277 6.5 197Highest 26.2 271 5.0 153Total 15-24 27.8 1,285 6.5 755Note: Figures in parentheses are based on 25-49 unweighted cases.1Friends, family members, and home are not considered a source for condoms.HIV/AIDS-Related Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behaviour | 215
