5 percent of young men had sex by age 15 while 48 percent of young women and 34 percent of youngmen had sex by age 18, which indicates that young women start having sexual intercourse at a youngerage than young men. For both women and men, these proportions are higher among ever-marriedrespondents than never-married respondents. Young people who use condoms at first sex aremore likely to maintain condom use later in life. Condom use at first sex serves as an indicator of reducedrisk of exposure to HIV at the beginning of sexual activity.Table 13.20 shows that, among young people age 15-24 who have ever had sex, 43 percent ofwomen and 49 percent of men used condoms during first sexual intercourse. Never-married youngwomen and men were more likely than ever-married young women and men to report using a condom thefirst time they had sex. Table 13.21 focuses on nevermarriedyoung people and shows the percentage who have never had sex, the percentage who had sex inthe 12 months preceding the survey, and among those, the percentage who used a condom the last timethey had sex. The data show that 46 percent of young women and 58 percent of young men reported thatthey had never had sex, and the proportion is somewhat higher among young people in rural areas.Among those who reported having sex in the 12 months preceding the survey, more young men (70percent) than young women (54 percent) reported using a condom during last sexual intercourse.
