Table 12.1 shows the percentages of households owning various types of mosquito nets (treatedor untreated) and the average number of nets per household by background characteristics. Overall, 6percent of households owned some type of mosquito net. Two percent of households owned more thanone net. Virtually all of the households with nets had an ever-treated net, i.e., a net that had beenpretreated with insecticide or a non-pretreated net that the household had soaked in insecticide at leastonce. A somewhat smaller proportion of households (4 percent) owned an ITN. A net is considered to bean insecticide-treated net if it was: (1) a factory-treated net that does not require any further treatment; (2)a pretreated net obtained within the past 12 months; or (3) a net that has been soaked with insecticidewithin the past 12 months.Table 12.1 Ownership of mosquito netsPercentage of households with at least one and more than one mosquito net (treated or untreated), ever-treated mosquito net, andinsecticide-treated net (ITN), and the average number of nets per household, by background characteristics, Swaziland2006-07BackgroundcharacteristicAny type of mosquito net Ever-treated mosquito net 1Percentagewithat leastonePercentagewithmorethan oneAveragenumber ofnets perhouseholdPercentagewithat leastonePercentagewithmorethan oneAveragenumber ofever-treatednets perhouseholdInsecticide-treated mosquitonets (ITNs) 2Percentagewithat leastonePercentagewithmorethan oneAveragenumberof ITNs perhouseholdNumber ofhouseholdsResidenceUrban 4.9 1.5 0.1 4.7 1.3 0.1 3.2 0.9 0.0 1,565Rural 6.7 1.8 0.1 6.5 1.7 0.1 5.0 1.3 0.1 3,278RegionHhohho 2.4 0.8 0.0 2.4 0.8 0.0 1.6 0.7 0.0 1,370Manzini 3.0 0.7 0.0 2.9 0.6 0.0 2.2 0.6 0.0 1,537Shiselweni 3.0 0.7 0.0 3.0 0.7 0.0 2.5 0.7 0.0 931Lubombo 18.8 5.3 0.2 17.9 5.0 0.2 13.2 3.1 0.2 1,005Wealth quintileLowest 9.0 2.8 0.1 8.7 2.8 0.1 7.3 2.4 0.1 824Second 6.3 1.6 0.1 6.3 1.4 0.1 4.2 1.0 0.1 805Middle 4.1 1.0 0.1 3.8 1.0 0.0 2.4 0.7 0.0 866Fourth 4.3 1.2 0.1 4.1 1.0 0.1 3.5 0.9 0.0 1,064Highest 6.9 1.9 0.1 6.7 1.8 0.1 4.7 1.1 0.1 1,284Total 6.1 1.7 0.1 5.9 1.6 0.1 4.4 1.2 0.1 4,8431An ever-treated net is a pretreated or a non-pretreated net which has subsequently been soaked with insecticide at any time.2An insecticide-treated net (ITN) is 1) a factory-treated net that does not require any further treatment, 2) a pretreated net obtainedwithin the past 12 months, or 3) a net that has been soaked with insecticide within the past 12 months.Rural households are slightly more likely to own any type of mosquito net than urban households. The Lubombo region has the highest level of ownership of mosquito nets in all categories. Almost onefifth of households in Lubombo own some type of mosquito net; 18 percent have at least one ever-treatedmosquito net, and 13 percent have an ITN. It should be noted that Lubombo has the sentinel sites whereITNs are being distributed by the NMCP as part of the RBM campaign.170 | Malaria and Other Health Issues
