Appendix CIntroduction to Simscape ®This appendix is a brief introduction to the Simscape <strong>and</strong> its libraries. Our discussion will beon the Foundation, Sim<strong>Electronic</strong>s, SimPowerSystems, <strong>and</strong> Utilities libraries. The Simscapemain library also includes the SimDriveline, SimHydraulics, <strong>and</strong> SimMechanics libraries,<strong>and</strong> these will not be discussed in this appendix.C.1 Simscape LibrariesThe Simulink models consist of blocks which represent mathematical operations, addition, subtraction,multiplication, division, differentiation, integration, <strong>and</strong> combinations of these. A Simulinkmodel is thus a mathematical model of a system to be designed. Simscape, on the other h<strong>and</strong>,is a set of block libraries in a Physical Network that represents a physical system layout with blocksrepresenting physical components with units of measurement. A Simscape model can also bethought of an engineering drawing from which a system can be assembled.Simscape has its own libraries of blocks <strong>and</strong> allows us to connect Simulink blocks as sources <strong>and</strong>sinks such as XY Graphs <strong>and</strong> Scope blocks. The Simscape libraries discussed in this appendix areshown in Figure C.1. It can be accessed by typing simscape at the MATLAB comm<strong>and</strong> prompt orthrough the Simulink Library Browser.
