Anthony Paul has practiced as a Landscape designer for over 30 years and is known for his innovative and contemporary
gardens. He has been inspired by Japanese garden design and some of his work illustrates this
influence. Lakes, swimming pools and water have become one of his specialty areas of design. He grew up in
New Zealand and the rainforests and stunning landscape of that country also forms a reference for his work.
Over the years Anthony has designed gardens and specialty garden buildings around the world - to include the
UK, New Zealand, Australia, France, Switzerland, and the Mediterranean. He has also lectured in his discipline
in a number of these countries
Anthony Paul's clients are mostly private individuals but he has recently completed a project for the University
of Brighton and has been re-engaged on another new project for them.
Gardens and landscapes are too precious a possession to be left to chance, and Anthony Paul’s landscapes are
built on practical experience, and a sensitive understanding of materials, plants, and spatial use. His gardens
are unique for their strong form and special use of architectural planting.
Anthony Paul is a Fellow of the Society of Garden Designers and works form his garden studio in Surrey in the
internationally known Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden run by his wife.
Personal Statement
''There is still so much to consider in our environment and I always try to be as caring and tender with my landscapes
and gardens. I am always looking for ways to enhance the space I am given, both aesthetically and environmentally.
My gardens are restrained and simple requiring little maintenance. I am not interested in lots of pretty flowers
and colour just for the sake of it. I try to keep a simple plant palette and work with materials and plants which
look natural in the environment I am given
The way garden sits in the landscape is my main concern I sometimes feel that I fill in the foreground like a
stage and the background is done by a far bigger hand than mine; the borrowed scenery gives presence and
credibility to my designs.
