Nato a Bologna l'8 agosto 1932 e trasferito a Roma con la famiglia da ragazzo.
Dopo aver frequentato la facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia dell'Università Cattolica del S. Cuore, matura la vocazione
al sacerdozio.
Entra come alunno all'Almo Collegio Capranica in Roma e frequenta la Pontificia Università Gregoriana, dove
consegue la Licenza in S. Teologia; è ordinato sacerdote il 25 luglio 1959 e inviato come Vicario Cooperatore
nella Parrocchia dei S. Urbano e Lorenzo a Prima Porta.
Nel 1961, aprendosi a Monte Mario la Facoltà di Medicina dell'Università Cattolica del S. Cuore, ne è nominato
primo Assistente spirituale, assumendo anche l'insegnamento accademico dell'Etica medica. In questi anni consegue
la Laurea in Teologia presso la Pont. Università Lateranense.
Nell'aprile del 1972 è nominato parroco di S. Lucia al Clodio in Roma.
Nel dicembre 1989 è nominato Vescovo tit. di Vannida con Deputazione ad Ausilare di Roma per il Settore Nord
della città.
Il 6 gennaio 1981 riceve nella Basilica di S. Pietro la Consacrazione Episcopale della Sua Santità il Papa Giovanni
Paolo Paolo II°.
Nel 1985 è nominato anche Assistente spirituale nazionale del U.N.I.T.A.L.S.I.
Il 7 giugno 1986 è promosso alla Chiesa Arcivescovile Metropolitana di Pisa, facendo l'ingesso in Diocesi il 17
giugno.
Nel 1991 è nominato anche Presidente nazionale dell'U.N.I.T.A.L.S.I. Fino al 1999.
Il 2 febbraio 2008 vengono pubblicate le sue dimissioni da Arcivescovo, per raggiunti limiti di età. Si trasferisce
a Roma nel Palazzo del Vicariato in via della Pigna, 13.

In 1961, when the Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart opened at Monte Mario, he
was appointed first Spiritual Assistant and took on the academic teaching of Medical Ethics. In these years he graduated
in Theology at the pontifical Lateran University.
In April 1972 he was ordained parish priest of S. Lucia al Clodio in Rome.
In December 1989 he was appointed Titular Bishop of Vannida with delegation to Auxiliary of Rome for the
northern area of the city.
On 6 January 1981 he was consecrated Archbishop in the Basilica of St Peter by Pope John Paul II.
in 1985 he was appointed National Spiritual Assistant of the UNITALSI
On 7 June 1986 he was appointed Archbishop of Pisa and installed on 17 June
In 1991 he was appointed National President of the UNITALSI until 1999
On 2 February 2008 he retired as Archbishop having reach the age limit. He moved to Rome to the Palace of the
Vicariato in 13, Via della Pigna.

Per aver dedicato la sua vita al florovivaismo e in modo particolare, come rappresentante
della VBN (Associazione delle Aste Olandesi) presso l’Unione Europea essersi
impegnato affinché il florovivaismo fosse integrato a pieno titolo nelle attività produttive
importanti nella U.E. Per essersi adoperato affinché l’U.E. predisponesse una campagna
promozionale per i fiori e per le piante europee. La sua attività a favore del florovivaismo
continua anche come Presidente del Comitato Piante e Fiori del Copa-
Cogeca in seno alla U.E.
For having dedicated his life to nursery gardening and, especially as representative of
the VBN (Association of Dutch Flower Auctions) at the European union, committing himself
to the task of ensuring that nursery gardening should become completely integrated in the important production
activities of the E.U. .For having done his best to persuade the E.U. to organise a promotional campaign for
European flowers and plants. His activity on behalf of nursery gardening continues also in his capacity of President
of the Flower and Plant Committee of Copa-Cogeca within the E.U.
