bullet diameter so the bullet would be forced into
the barrel’s rifling during firing). Even a casual
glance will inform you that “bigger is better” when
it comes to throwing bullet weight at your
intended target. Adding to this is the cartridge
length which runs the gamut depending upon
manufacturer’s specifications. For example, the
.50 A.E. round of Magnum Research’s famous
Desert Eagle brand of automatic pistols is actually
shorter and less stable in trajectory than Wildey’s
‘smaller’ .475 cartridge.
However, I’m going to restrict our
discussion primarily to three cartridges – the 9mm
(for automatics and, later in this book, for
submachine guns); the .40 S&W; and the always
reliable .45 ACP. Others, such as the .475 Wildey
Magnum will receive honorable mention in a bit
for personal reasons to be discussed. For now, let’s
stick with the three.
The 9mm works well in automatic
handguns (as opposed to the previously mentioned
.38 Special revolvers) because they can be loaded
ten at a time (sometimes even up to sixteen in
extended magazines) with an additional one
chambered for a total of eleven rounds versus six
for the revolver. Where revolvers generally edge
out in accuracy, automatics make up for in
providing you with an extra four rounds before
reloading is necessary (which is itself infinitely
quicker with an automatic by virtue of its preloaded
magazines).
The 9mm is a kind gun for most ladies also,
who, although they may still face “drug crazed
thugs”, have the reassurances that ten to sixteen
