That might come later. For now, you need to drop
some weight and beef some muscles. Well, at least
this won’t set you back $7-$8,000. In fact, the
whole premise of this book is to get you to do
extraordinary things mostly with what’s available
to you.
For starters, I’ve personally dropped fifteen
pounds by switching to Diet Coke ® (then Zero ® )
instead of the regular stuff. Another ten pounds
went by walking more than I had before – and that
was about twenty miles per day. You can shorten
the distance requirement by using the stairs at
work, parking just a bit further from the door
whenever you go shopping, and if you live within
five miles of the store, go shopping on foot instead
of driving everywhere. A key element in using your
feet to burn weight is to walk within the natural
environment. No treadmills. No stair climbers.
None of that expensive crap.
The principle of cross-training is that all of
your muscles are interconnected. In fact, were you
to have an arm or leg in a cast, exercising its
unbroken twin will actually benefit the immobile
member. So, when you do your walking and
running, take advantage of the asymmetrical
environment of hills, curves, bumps, and your
ever-present manmade obstacles. Exercise your
balance while you exercise your muscles. Alternate
between bursts of speed followed by long-distance
‘cruising’ and then back to ever-increasing sprints.
Save repetition for indoor exercises that keep your
body in tone while you wait for an opportunity to
head back outside.
