ASSAULT rifles<br />

When the assault weapons ban expired in<br />

2004 an entire new cottage industry flourished<br />

and we Americans can thank our lucky stars that<br />

we live within this great nation of ours and can<br />

finally access the best technology in which to<br />

protect ourselves against our adversaries. Fullauto<br />

rifles can be found, but herein is really no<br />

need to pay such exorbitant prices.<br />

With our adversaries consistently turning<br />

towards the AK-47 (Author’s note: the vast<br />

majority of AK’s that you see on the news or in the<br />

papers are, in fact, much newer AKMs. The AKM<br />

has a pronounced dimple in the receiver near<br />

where the magazine is loaded. The AK-47<br />

doesn’t 83 ), you’re going to need something<br />

comparable. Enter the AR-15 clones that have<br />

swarmed the market in recent years.<br />

First let’s describe the ‘assault rifle’, a rather<br />

ambiguous term that terrifies some and confuses<br />

the rest. Assault rifles are not inherently more<br />

dangerous than, say, hunting rifles and are quite<br />

more durable than hunting rifles when used for<br />

that sport. The Clinton-era gun ban rested on two<br />

hallmark features – the multi-round magazines<br />

and such things as bayonet mounts. The reduction<br />

of a thirty round clip to a five round clip was<br />

purely cosmetic; any determined criminal could do<br />

as much damage with the five-round as with the<br />

thirty-round. It would only mean that they would<br />

have to spend an extra few seconds by changing
