It may seem to be a very depressing way of
life besides one that is lonely, but it is not. I find
immense joy and a strong sense of duty in what I
do and for which I am certain has attracted you to
fighting terrorism – in your own little way – too.
There’s a strong sense of pride (patriotic and
otherwise) in knowing that you must keep on your
toes every minute of every day; that you must
examine every little facet of your life and habits.
While others continually purchase lottery
tickets because “sooner or later I’ll be lucky” you
practice and prepare for survival because “sooner
or later, you might not be so lucky.” You cannot
accept chance within your life. Your ‘team’ wins
because they prepare, not because the refs were
screwy, or the weather was against them, or there
were too many injuries. You expect bad things to
happen and pray that God keeps you alive – not
expect good things and pray only to God when the
bad happens. You use the tools that He gave you to
continue living because the ‘other guy’ is also
praying and God doesn’t play favorites.
Yes, your life will become lonely but very,
very exciting – just like the astronomer of old who
sat high up in his mountaintop observatory. He
didn’t do it for wealth, or companionship, or
perhaps even recognition. He did it simply to
understand the sheer beauty and complexity of the
world. He could see threats out there – threats that
could end the human race – but he also knew that
he might not be around when they came into play.
His work was just so that humanity could survive.
