4. Overall, <strong>the</strong> economic damage caused by this disaster has been estimated at some 10.1<br />

billion USD, or 5.8% <strong>of</strong> GDP 4 . Immense infrastructure losses were registered including 2.9 million<br />

households <strong>of</strong> which 1.9 were severely affected or completely destroyed, livelihoods disrupted<br />

with 80% <strong>of</strong> food reserves lost. As a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> floods prices have been dramatically driven up<br />

while <strong>the</strong> affected population’s purchasing power has fallen.<br />

According to <strong>the</strong> Pakistan Floods Preliminary Damage and Needs Assessment 2010, ADB/WB, November 2010 direct<br />

damage caused by <strong>the</strong> floods is estimated to PKR 552 billion (US$ 6.5 billion) while indirect losses amount to PKR 303<br />

billion (US$ 3.6 billion)<br />
