Spitzweg aufbaute.
Die Neue Pinakothek eröffnete 1853 unter König Ludwig
I., der seine Privatsammlung zeitgenössischer europäischer
Gemälde angemessen der Öffentlichkeit
präsentieren wollte. Nachdem das alte Gebäude im
Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstört wurde, entstand 1981 ein
neuer Museumsbau.
The Pinakothek der Moderne, with works by Beckmann,
Kandinsky, Marc, Macke, Klee, Magritte and
Picasso, is one of the largest and most important modern
art galleries in the world. Visiting exhibitions complement
the extensive collection. The building, by the
architect Stephan Braunfels, unites four different collections
under one roof: The Modern Art collection,
the state-owned Graphic Collection, the New Collection
dedicated to design and the Architecture Museum
of the Technical University.
A generous donation forms the basis of the latest addition
to the site. Right next to the Pinakothek der Moderne,
an impressive new museum holds the Brandhorst
collection of contemporary works by modern
artists. The façade of this building is decorated with
thousands of ceramic bars of various colours. 700
works from the collection of Udo and Anette Brandhorst
are now on show in their entirety for the first time
in this architectural jewel constructed by the federal
state of Bavaria. Visitors to this gallery can look forward
to seeing precious works by Andy Warhol, Damien
Hirst, Pablo Picasso, Sigmar Polke and Cy Twombly.
As an art venue, Munich boasts more than 16 museums
and exhibition halls, more than 40 galleries and
