Dave Harte
about Castle Vale in the light of its regeneration, Tyburn Mail still
has a vital role to play in charting the effect of austerity on what
remains of local public services. To do so it must engage with, and
perhaps confront, the notion of what it means to be from the ‘The
Vale’, and the value of continuing to practise a normative model of
journalism. Perhaps by refocusing on the banal, hyperlocal media
operations such as Tyburn Mail have a chance to articulate a citizenled
vision of what everyday life in areas such as ‘The Vale’ is really
like.
Acknowledgements
The author is grateful to the citizens of Castle Vale who participated in this research,
and to Topcliffe Media, publishers of Tyburn Mail. Jerome Turner designed the
workshop activities described above and John Coster from Citizen Eye Media
helped with the development of the news café. The ‘Media, community and the
creative citizen’ project has received funding from the Arts and Humanities Research
Council’s Connected Communities scheme and the Engineering and Physical
Sciences Research Council’s Digital Economy scheme, grant number AH/J005290/1
