A LIBERATING YOKE
“Put not your trust/hope in princes, in the sons of man, in whom there is no
salvation.” (Ps 145/146: 3)
This verse warns me about having improper expectations of human
beings, including myself. And by “improper” I mean the kind of trust we
have in God, in Whom we find “salvation.” The word “salvation” (from the
Latin “salvus,” meaning “sound” or “whole,” referring to people’s health)
means the process of our recovery or restoration to health. While God
does work through other people in this process, it is His grace that brings
about healing and recovery through and amidst human interaction.
Today I am mindful of letting God’s grace into the picture of all my
relationships, with myself and other people. No human being can fill the
hole in my heart, when it wanders off and seeks fulfillment outside God,
in burdensome self-reliance or human codependency.
Let me rather take His “yoke“ upon me today, and carry it into all my
relationships. His “yoke“ liberates me from the burdens of grace-less
human interaction, bringing
me healing and peace. “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I
am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Mt
11: 29)
