SELF-GIVING IS HEALING
“That evening they brought to him many who were possessed with demons;
and he cast out the spirits with a word, and cured all who were sick. This
was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah, “He took
our infirmities and bore our diseases.” (Mt 8: 16-17)
Jesus takes our “infirmities” upon Himself and carries them. This selfgiving
of the God-Man heals.
Today I can practice self-giving in small ways, by lending an ear, taking
some time to put others first in some way. I can make it a point to ask, and
then actually listen, how someone is doing. Maybe I can make a phone
call to an elderly or lonely relative. I can say a short prayer for someone
who’s done me wrong, as for a fellow struggler. I can shut up when I
notice someone else’s weakness, rather than put them on the spot.
A bit of self-giving, of carrying the burdens of others, is healing both for
me and others around me. “Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way
you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Gal 6:2)
