THIRSTING AND RECEIVING
“Let anyone who thirsts come to me, and let the one who believes in me
drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers
of living water.’ Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him
were to receive…” (Jn 7: 37-39)
This passage is in the Gospel-reading of Pentecost, at the Byzantine
Divine Liturgy. Jesus is basically repeating what He said to the Samaritan
woman, about the “living water” that He has on offer. The prerequisite for
receiving this water is simple: Thirst, and come to Me.
Today let me identify this thirst, deep inside me, and focus my desires
and ambitions on Him and in Him. Because it’s easy to mistake that
feeling, deep inside me, of insufficiency without the Spirit, for something
else. I can feel something is lacking in my life, and misdirect my spiritual
thirst toward some temporary “fix,” be it unhealthy food, unnecessary
shopping, obsessive physical fitness, workaholism, or whatever. “Come
and abide in us, and cleanse us of all impurity,” I pray today to the Lord,
the Holy Spirit, “and save our souls, O Good One.”
