“Touch me not!“ (John 20: 17)
ACCEPTING CHANGE
Christ says these words to Mary Magdalene, having appeared to her after
His resurrection. How painfully unexpected this must have been for her.
Something had changed. He is preparing her for a different, sublimer
level of communion with Him: the sacramental reality of the Church.
It is often painful for me to accept change, especially in a relationship. For
example, when a loved one is ageing or near death. To accept parting, the
parting with their physical presence, and the fact that physical touch will
no longer be possible. I want to cling... But let me remind myself of the
bigger picture: Through change, suffering, parting, and death I am being
led to growth. More specifically, to growth in faith; to gratefully and even
joyously embrace the truth of the Resurrection and all its consequences.
Let me bear His cross today, not with fear or resentment, but with a focus
on the Resurrection.
