DOING THINGS HIS WAY
“But give rather the spirit of whole-mindedness, humility, patience, and
love to Your servant.” (Lenten Prayer of St. Ephrem, part 2)
Doing things in God’s “Spirit” does not mean that I stop doing things.
That may be obvious, but I find that it needs to be said, at least to me. On
a daily basis, I must go on with responsibilities, relationships, concerns,
issues, and initiatives. But I let God into the whole picture, connecting
with Him in prayer, and letting Him give me what He already wants to
give me, before I pray,–His Spirit.
Today I go forward, in God’s light, combining any interactions with people
with “whole-mindedness,” being careful not to approach any human
being in a self-indulgent or self-seeking manner. I combine my initiatives
with humility and patience, accepting and facing my responsibilities,
while leaving their outcomes in God’s hands. I do the next right thing, to
the best of my ability, while letting God’s love for me, for others, and for
our sometimes-dysfunctional world, into my heart. God is willing to give
me His Spirit when I ask for Him, as He invites me to: “If you then, who
are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more
will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (Lk
11: 13)
