REALITY CHECK
“Jesus said, ‘I came into this world for judgment (εἰς κρίμα) so that those
who do not see may see, and those who do see may become blind.’ Some of
the Pharisees near him heard this and said to him, ‘Surely we are not blind,
are we?’ Jesus said to them, ‘If you were blind, you would not have sin. But
now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.’” (Jn 9: 39-41)
Christ comes into this world “for judgment,” that is, to give us His
assessment, His vision, if you will, of our state of affairs. Without His
vision, on my own, I am blind. This is the point He is making to the
Pharisees, – and to me, whenever I am inclined to “see” things my way,
without shedding His light on them. His light is the “reality check” I need
on a daily basis, lest I slip into certain, common delusions about myself,
others, and events/circumstances around me. In communion with Him,
I am liberated from the insecurities, frustrations, and resulting fears of
“wishful thinking,” and am given humble acceptance of myself, other
people, and things as He sees them; as they are.
Today let me open up to the light of God’s “judgment,” by taking a bit of
time for heartfelt prayer and reading of His word. His judgment, in His
Spirit, brings me neither apathy nor despair. It brings me the humble
acceptance of cross-carrying, step by step. He can, and He does, give me
the strength to do the next right thing, when I walk in His light.
