RESPONSIBILITY = ABILITY TO RESPOND
"If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his
cross and follow Me.” (Mt 16: 24)
I recently heard someone say something perhaps obvious, but that
I hadn’t thought about quite in this way, – that “responsibility” means
“the ability to respond.” So, facing up to my daily responsibilities, which
can sometimes seem a drag, is simply that: responding to a call. And the
bigger picture is, it’s Christ’s call to me, to carry my cross and follow Him.
That’s also what it means to be part of Church, or “ekklesia,” which comes
from the Greek “ek–kaleo”: It means “the called out (ones).” Implicitly
this means “the responding ones” as well!
The truth is, I have to go to a dinner today that I don’t feel like going to.
It’s not a big deal, but neither are some other little things that I want to
avoid or procrastinate away,
until I remember Who it is calling me. “For my yoke is easy,” He says, “and
my burden is light.” (Mt 11: 30) This is true, when I see things in His light.
