APRIL 24
HONOR IN HUMILITY
“When he (Jesus) noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told
them a parable. ‘When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet,
do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished
than you has been invited by your host, and the host who invited both of you
may come and say to you, ‘Give this person your place,’ and then in disgrace
you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and
sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say
to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’; then you will be honored in the presence
of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be
humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’” (Lk 14: 7-11)
So here the Lord gives me a small lesson on etiquette. What He basically
says is, Don’t make someone else’s wedding about YOU! This may seem
obvious,–but still, He knows it needs to be said. It may be silly, and yet it’s
so human, to turn any social occasion, as well as life in general, into a selfseeking
exercise in somehow gaining honor or recognition for one’s self.
But the Lord is saying to me: Don’t worry about that. Go and seek to
honor others, putting them first, and the “host” (God) will see to the rest.
It is the path of humility, which liberates me from the frustrations of selfseeking,
and brings me honor at His table.
