Inspector General Sopko Speaks at the<br />

Center for Strategic and International Studies<br />

On January 11, 2017, Inspector General (IG) Sopko spoke at the Center for<br />

Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) about Afghanistan’s enduring<br />

challenges for the new Administration and Congress. During his speech,<br />

IG Sopko announced <strong>SIGAR</strong>’s updated High-Risk List and its eight key areas<br />

of concern. IG Sopko also discussed some of Afghanistan’s positive developments<br />

since the release of the initial High-Risk List, including a greater<br />

willingness among the Afghan government to fight corruption and the<br />

leadership and reform efforts of Resolute Support mission, the Combined<br />

Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, and the U.S. Embassy<br />

in Afghanistan.<br />

Dr. Anthony Cordesman, the Arleigh A. Burke Chair at CSIS, also spoke<br />

at the event about U.S. policy in Afghanistan and highlighted his newly<br />

released report, The Trump Transition and the Afghan War: The Need for<br />

Decisive Action.<br />

Deputy Inspector General Aloise Speaks at<br />

the National Defense University<br />

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Gene Aloise spoke at the College of<br />

International Security Affairs of the National Defense University in<br />

December. In his speech, DIG Aloise discussed the scale of the Afghanistan<br />

reconstruction effort and <strong>SIGAR</strong>’s mission to support this effort by<br />
