Jesus speaking. I want you to notice the<br />

introduction to the parable, this is crucial. Jesus is<br />

discussing here works of the law. Verse 9 is the<br />

introduction:<br />

To some who were confident of their own<br />

righteousness and looked down on everybody else,<br />

Jesus told this parable:<br />

Now here is one difference. Normally, a<br />

person who does works of the law always despises<br />

others. <strong>The</strong>y look down upon others. Continuing<br />

with verse 10:<br />

“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a<br />

Pharisee and the other a tax collector.<br />

Now who is a Pharisee? What did the word<br />

“Pharisee” mean to the Jew? (Not to us<br />

Adventists, because we have given the word<br />

“Pharisee” a negative meaning.) But to the Jew,<br />

“Pharisee” did not have a negative meaning. A<br />
