Verse 7:
These have come so that your faith — of
greater worth than gold, which perishes even
though refined by fire — may be proved genuine
and may result in praise, glory and honor when
Jesus Christ is revealed.
The words, “gold refined by fire,” in the
Hebrew thinking, in the Old Testament, is simply
“purified faith,” faith that has been purified. And
in the New Testament, that faith that has been
purified is known as “the faith of Jesus Christ,”
because the faith of Jesus was purified.
You remember in Gethsemane, if you read
Mark 14:32 onwards, three times Jesus prayed to
His Father, “Father, please remove the cup,
nevertheless not My will but Thine.” He did not
allow self to have any part in His ministry. And
every dross of self was crucified in the life of
Christ. Now when we first accept Christ our faith
is egocentric. In other words, we accept Christ
