person and he made her clean his shoes, fetch<br />

and carry for him. Betty never said anything as<br />

they all treated April badly. April was still at<br />

such a young age to be doing this and people<br />

noticed. They often tried to help her, but if they<br />

mentioned it to Betty she would tell them to<br />

mind their own business.<br />

One day, when April had had enough and told<br />

the teacher why she was being late. April and<br />

her teacher, Mrs Mills, spoke for half an hour<br />

before class started. She told Mrs Mills about<br />

her horrid step-mother and her demanding stepbrother.<br />

Mrs Mills then said that she would not<br />

hit April anymore for being late and that she<br />

understood. April enjoyed classes now as Mrs<br />

Mills helped April and always told her that she<br />

was a bright pupil and very well behaved at<br />

school. April liked her as she was one of the only<br />

people that understood the struggles that she was<br />

going through.<br />

Sometimes at the weekends April enjoyed<br />

helping people with their shopping. The lady<br />

up the street grew vegetables and she had an<br />

apple tree in the garden. She sold the apples and<br />

vegetables from her shed and asked April to help<br />

her out at the weekends. This gave April another<br />

chance to escape the prison which was her house<br />

although she knew that she would have to return.<br />

April enjoyed this, and the lady paid her for
