Αδιαμφισβήτητα η ιστορία του νησιού είναι ένδοξη παρά το μέγεθός<br />
του. Η έκτασή του είναι μόλις 29 τετραγωνικά χλμ., με μήκος στα<br />
10 τετραγωνικά χλμ. και πλάτος στα 5. Απέχει μόλις 48χλμ. από<br />
τη Χώρα Σφακίων και 314χλμ. από το Τομπρούκ της Λιβύης. Στο<br />
νησί πλέον ζουν λιγότεροι από 50 άνθρωποι, όμως την καλοκαιρινή<br />
σεζόν ο αριθμός των τουριστών που κατακλύζουν το νησί μπορεί<br />
να ξεπεράσει και τις 3,5 χιλιάδες, οι περισσότεροι εκ των οποίων<br />
είναι κατασκηνωτές, αφού οι τουριστικές υποδομές και υπηρεσίες<br />
στη Γαύδο είναι στοιχειώδεις. Το λιμάνι της Γαύδου είναι η<br />
Καραβέ, ενώ η πρωτεύουσά της το Καστρί, όπου εκεί πληρείται η<br />
βασική τουριστική υποδομή του νησιού. Η Γαύδος συνολικά έχει<br />
4 γραφικούς οικισμούς, ενώ ο νοτιότερος κατοικημένος οικισμός<br />
της και συνεπώς ο νοτιότερος της Ευρώπης, είναι τα Βατσιανά, με<br />
συνολικό πληθυσμό 23 κατοίκων! Πέρα δώθε στο νησί ο επισκέπτης<br />
θα δει να “ξεφυτρώνουν” πέτρινα μετόχια, υπενθυμίζοντάς του<br />
παλιές εποχές ακμής και κατοίκησης του νησιού.<br />
In modern Greece, the communists were exiled in the island in<br />
1930, while during the Second World War; Allied forces moved<br />
some troops in Gavdos, after the victory of Germans in the Battle<br />
of Crete. Undoubtedly the island’s history is glorious despite its<br />
size. Its area is just 29 square km., with a length of 10 sq. km and<br />
a width of 5 sq. km. It is just 48 km. far away from Sfakia and 314<br />
km. from Tobruk of Libya. Nowadays the island has no more of 50<br />
people, while in the summertime the number of tourists who visit<br />
the island can exceed in 3,500.<br />
Most of them are campers, since tourism services and infrastructure<br />
are the basics in Gavdos. The harbor of Gavdos is called Karave<br />
while its capital is Kastri. In Kastri you will meet the basic<br />
tourist infrastructure of the island. Gavdos has four picturesque<br />
villages, where Vatsiana is the most southern village of Europe<br />
with population of 23 people! Around the island, visitors will see<br />
houses made by stone, reminding them the periods of peak and<br />
habitation of it. It is worth mentioning that there is electricity in<br />
the villages, but at the beaches and at the accommodations is<br />
turned off after midnight and generators turn on. Do not let this<br />
get you down. The utter lack of light since Gavdos doesn’t have<br />
bright lighting but also because of its position that does not allow<br />
to be illuminated from other cities, make the sky of the summer<br />
nights so unique and mysterious as if one is in a laboratory of<br />
NASA, ready to discover his/her own stars.<br />
Αξίζει να αναφέρουμε ότι η ηλεκτροδότηση στους οικισμούς είναι<br />
μόνιμη, στις παραλίες όμως και στα καταλύματα διακόπτεται μετά τις 12<br />
το βράδυ, παίρνοντας σειρά οι γεννήτριες. Μη σας χαλάει καθόλου τη<br />
διάθεση αυτό. Η παντελής έλλειψη φωτός στο νησί, αφού ούτε η ίδια η<br />
Γαύδος έχει έντονο φωτισμό αλλά και λόγω της θέσης της που δεν της<br />
επιτρέπει να φωτίζεται από άλλες πόλεις, κάνουν τον ουρανό της τα<br />
βράδια του καλοκαιριού τόσο μοναδικό και μυστήριο λες και βρίσκεται<br />
κανείς σε κάποιο εργαστήριο της ΝASA, έτοιμος να ανακαλύψει τα δικά<br />
του άστρα.<br />
Το αξιοθέατο που επιβάλλεται να επισκεφτεί κάποιος βρισκόμενος<br />
στη Γαύδο είναι αρχικά ο περίφημος φάρος του νησιού, ο οποίος<br />
κατασκευάστηκε το 1880 σε υψόμετρο 368 μέτρων και ήταν ορατός<br />
από απόσταση 40 μιλίων. Δεσπόζει αγέρωχος μέχρι σήμερα και σας<br />
περιμένει να τον συναντήσετε, ενώ στο εσωτερικό του μπορείτε να<br />
απολαύσετε τον καφέ σας, αγναντεύοντας τη Γαυδοπούλα – το μικρό<br />
νησάκι δίπλα στη Γαύδο – αλλά και στο βάθος την Κρήτη.<br />
In Gavdos you should visit the famous lighthouse of the island,<br />
which was built in 1880 at an altitude of 368 meters and was visible<br />
from a distance of 40 miles. It stands proud until today, waiting<br />
for you to meet it. You can enjoy your coffee inside while gazing<br />
Gavdopoula - the small island next to Gavdos – and Crete too. Other<br />
attractions of the island include the Venetian Castle in Kefali, the<br />
Roman ruins on the hill of Ai – Giannis, the tombs in Lavraka and<br />
the unique ” throne” in Tripiti. That famous “throne” is the most<br />
southernmost chair of Europe. You have to walk about 8 km to get<br />
there, about 2 to 2.5 hours. The view in this spot is breathtaking.<br />
The awe you will feel in front of the sea and the natural landscape<br />
of Gavdos is a feeling that you will remember for a lifetime.<br />
At this point it is interesting to hint to the great beaches of this “full<br />
of surprises” island. Ai – Giannis is the most famous beach, which<br />
holds the title of the second best beach in the world, according to<br />
Discovery Channel.<br />
