Materials IT’S A STRETCH Lesson 2 Teacher Notes Science Inquiry Focus: How can the shape of an object be changed? Does it change back to its original shape? Skills Development/Working Scientifically: • Questioning and predicting • Investigating and experimenting • Estimating and measuring • Analysing • Recording and communicating Science Learning Outcome: • Pupils observe and describe changes when manipulating playdough and a rubber band. Technology/Engineering/Mathematics Links: • Designing a picture/object from playdough. • Working as part of a collaborative team to build an object from playdough. • Understanding the duration of ten seconds. • Using a digital timer/stopwatch. • Taking digital photographs. Additional note: At the end of the lesson, store playdough for future learning activities. Background Information • Materials and objects can change shape, size, colour and temperature. • Materials can be changed in a variety of physical ways such as bending, stretching, squashing, crushing, breaking, cutting, warming and cooling. • Some objects can have their shape changed and stay changed; for example, plasticine, playdough, paper clip, pipe cleaner. • Some objects can have their shape changed and then they return to their original shape; for example, rubber band, stress ball, sponge, foam, metal ruler. • Some objects cannot have their shape changed easily by hand; for example, a metal rod, a screw, a brick. Assessment Focus: • Observe the pupil’s actions during the playdough game and make anecdotal notes of their understanding of the terms bend, twist, squash and stretch. • Use page 105 to assess planning and conducting skills, including their ability to record observations and form a conclusion.
