Living Things CREATURE FEATURES IN DIFFERENT PLACES Lesson 4 Teacher Notes Science Inquiry Focus: What animals live in Irish woodlands and what body parts do they have that help them survive? Skills Development/Working Scientifically: • Questioning and predicting • Observing • Investigating and experimenting • Analysing • Recording and communicating Science Learning Outcome: • Make observations about where woodland animals live and how they use their body parts to survive. Background Information • Irish woodlands are home to a wide variety of living things. Each of these living things have adapted to living in a woodland area. The pupils can make a comprehensive list of living things that live in a woodland area. • In this lesson, pupils will learn to recognise and describe the parts of some living things. The particular focus of this lesson is on the animal’s footprint, though other external features are to be discussed. • This lesson allows pupils to focus on and research external features of a rabbit and how it uses its body parts to live in the woodlands. The pupils will make a fact minibook showing what they have learned about the rabbit. Technology/Engineering/Mathematics Links: • Using a digital camera to photograph footprints. • Research images and information about various animals from the Internet. • Designing and constructing a minibook. Assessment Focus: • Observe the pupil’s ability to investigate and use technology to record observations of the footprints, as well the pupil’s ability to research information about rabbits. • Use pages 27 to 30 as a formative assessment of the pupil’s understanding of how a rabbit’s external features help it survive in woodlands. Resources • Cut out footprints from pages 21–24 and animal images from pages 25–26 • Woodland animals video (start the video at 0.43 seconds) • Digital camera or tablet computer camera • Close-up video of a wild rabbit in the woods . Discuss the rabbit’s ears, eyes and colour.
