Living Things CREATURE FEATURES IN DIFFERENT PLACES STEM Project STEM Project: Teacher Notes Create an alien animal and design and build a 3-D display model showing its habitat. Report back by recording a video explaining the animal, its body parts and functions, and its requirements for a home. Estimated duration: 2–4 weeks 1. Introduce the project • Go to and click on the images to read the poems from the book Cock-A-Doodle Moooo! by Keith DuQuette. Ideally read the whole book if you have access to it. • Display page 50 to read to the class and introduce the problem and task. • Clarify any details pupils do not understand. • Demonstrate to the class how to go to the website and then demonstrate how to create an animal of yourself. • Explore some of the different body parts and discuss what purpose they might have. 2. Investigate • Pupils will explore the website individually to create their animal and then print it. • Pupils can explore the website to research the functions of each body part they selected. • They must address how they will move, eat and breathe, and what features assist with these things. • Pupils should complete the table on page 52 describing their chosen body parts, using the information from the website as well as their own research. 3. Design, plan and manage • Pupils form groups of three and design a habitat for all team members, by sketching a plan first. • Pupils ensure the sketch includes a suitable place for each animal creation to live, considering their body parts and how they move, eat and breathe. 4. Make • Pupils cut out and glue their animal creations onto card in order to place them into the 3-D habitat scene to be created. • Pupils build the 3-D display model. 5. Evaluate and refine • Pupils will check that their habitat diorama suits their alien animals. • Adjustments can be made to the parts of the habitat; for example, does it need a lake for an animal with fins to live in? Does it need to be cold for a furry animal to live in? 6. Communicate • Pupils record a video explaining their alien animal and the habitat they designed for it to live comfortably so it can use its body parts to move, eat and breathe. • The video can be shared via email or uploaded to the school website for friends and family to watch.
