Earth and the Environment IN THE SKY AND ON THE LAND STEM project Project A Scene for a Day and Night Video Game: STEM Project Overview Pupils design a day and night scene for a video game using a website called Toondoo. Pupils will need to consider the features in the sky as well as natural and constructed features in a landscape. Pupils also create a video to explain the features in the scenes and how the video game character interacts with the features. Concepts Overview: Science • Recall observable features of the night and day sky. • Recall observable natural and constructed features of a landscape. • Create a video to describe night and day scenes in a video game. • Observe and describe changes to the sky or landscape. Technology/Engineering • Plan steps collaboratively. • Learn how to correctly enter a URL into a web browser. • Design a day and night background scene for a video game using a website program (Toondoo). • Become familiar with a website program and understand the functionality. • Evaluate and revise the scene designs and/or the video. • Use a digital application to record a video. Mathematics • Give directions that a video game character needs to follow in order to interact with the features in a designed scene. • Use Venn diagrams to sort and classify information. Alternative Project Ideas: Viewing sample • Design and make a playground incorporating constructed and managed features. Pupils think about how the playground would look in the day and at night, and design features accordingly. • Read the book Window by Jeannie Baker. Pupils design and build a diorama view from a window, showing how natural or constructed features can change over time in a local landscape. • Create a night and day art wheel, as demonstrated in this Art Attack video .
