IT’S A STRETCH
Teacher Notes
Science Inquiry Focus:
What other physical changes can be made to an object?
Does an object go back to its original shape after a change
is made or does it stay changed?
Skills Development/Working Scientifically:
• Questioning and predicting
• Investigating and experimenting
• Estimating and measuring
• Analysing
• Recording and communicating
Science Learning Outcomes:
• Pupils observe sounds to determine what action is being
made.
• Pupils observe and describe changes that can be made
to a cracker biscuit.
Technology/Engineering/Mathematics Links:
• Participating in an online quiz.
• Observing digital audio files.
• Understanding one half of an object.
Background Information
• Materials and objects can change shape, size, colour
and temperature.
• Materials can be changed in a variety of physical ways
such as bending, stretching, squashing, crushing,
breaking, cutting, warming and cooling.
• Some examples of physical changes include crushing
a can or plastic bottle, breaking a glass, shredding
paper, chopping wood, crumpling a paper bag,
dicing vegetables and mixing crackers with water.
Assessment Focus:
• Use the experiment sheet on
page 116 as a formative assessment
of the pupil’s ability to plan and
conduct a procedure and use digital
technologies to record before and
after observations.
• Use Step 8 as a formative
assessment of the pupil’s
understanding that many physical
actions can cause an object or
material to change, and they cannot
be changed back to their original
shape.
Resources
• Changes to materials quiz

• Sound effects website

• Water crackers (or similar)
• Water and droppers
• Sandwich bags
• Novelty ice cube trays
• Digital camera device
• Sufficient copies of page 116
