<strong>Council</strong> uses Capital Improved Value (CIV) as the basis of valuation of all properties within the municipal district. The<br />
CIV of a property is the market value as determined by the Municipal Valuer as at 1 January 2016.<br />
The valuation base used to calculate general rates for <strong>2017</strong>/<strong>18</strong> was $19,011 million (2016/17 $<strong>18</strong>,719 million). The<br />
<strong>2017</strong>/<strong>18</strong> rate in the CIV dollar was 0.003431 (2016/17, 0.003364).<br />

The date of the latest general revaluation of land for rating purposes within the municipal district was 1 January 2016,<br />
and the valuation was first applied in the rating year commencing 1 July 2016.<br />
<strong>Annual</strong> rates and charges are recognised as revenues when <strong>Council</strong> issues annual rates notices. Supplementary rates<br />
are recognised when a valuation and reassessment is completed and a supplementary rates notice issued.<br />
