Work with the police, Victorian Government and the community to improve safety in homes, businesses, public<br />

Lead the implementation of the <strong>Cardinia</strong> Safer<br />
Communities Framework. Work with Safer<br />
Communities Committee to develop key actions<br />
to address safety issues within the shire. Achieve<br />
designation as an International Safe Community<br />
through an accreditation process with the<br />
International Certifying Centre.<br />
Improve awareness of township safety in local communities.<br />
Promote resilience building and community<br />
preparation for emergencies through community<br />
engagement and education. Identify and train<br />
community leaders to support communities to plan<br />
for and recover from emergencies. Work with the<br />
vulnerable groups and associated support services<br />
within the shire on emergency management<br />
planning. Deliver a bi-annual community resilience<br />
forum or series of workshops. Promote emergency<br />
safety awareness, programs and messaging,<br />
incorporating the <strong>Council</strong> developed emergency<br />
management videos.<br />
The Safer Communities Strategic Committee met<br />
regularly throughout the year to provide strategic<br />
oversight for the action groups. Formal groups in<br />
place for crime, mental health, alcohol and other<br />
drugs, and emergency management. These groups<br />
have developed action plans to guide their work.<br />
Successful grant applications have increased the<br />
capacity to deliver initiatives. <strong>Cardinia</strong> <strong>Shire</strong> was<br />
designated as an International Safe Community in<br />
October <strong>2017</strong>.<br />
A number of emergency planning sessions were<br />
delivered to groups across the shire with the aim<br />
to both educate residents on emergency planning<br />
and to identify vulnerable people and groups,<br />
so they can be supported to a greater level. The<br />
Emergency Management team continues to<br />
support community emergency planning groups<br />
across the shire by attending meetings, promoting<br />
resilience projects and providing expert advice.<br />
A Community Emergency Resilience Forum was<br />
held in May 20<strong>18</strong> with approximately 85 people in<br />
attendance. The evening enabled the community<br />
to learn about and share information on<br />
community resilience to emergencies. A number of<br />
communities are engaging with <strong>Council</strong> to consider<br />
emergency planning in their townships. The<br />
Emergency Management team is also working with<br />
Outlook to support emergency safety awareness<br />
for people with disabilities.<br />
