2015–19 through the focus areas of relationships,<br />

respect and opportunities by increasing knowledge<br />

of Aboriginal culture across the organisation and<br />

community. Actions include to partner with local<br />

organisations to acknowledge and/or celebrate<br />

days and events of Aboriginal cultural significance.<br />

Participate in programs linked to the Resilient<br />

Melbourne Initiative where appropriate.<br />

A Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD)<br />

advisory group was formed and is developing an<br />

action plan. A successful Harmony Day event was<br />

held at Pakenham Hall with excellent participation<br />

from diverse communities. An event was held at<br />

Living Learning Pakenham during Refugee Week,<br />

which was also well attended.<br />

The existing policy was reviewed and a new<br />

Disability Access and Inclusion Policy <strong>2017</strong>–21<br />

was endorsed by <strong>Council</strong> in August <strong>2017</strong>.<br />

A number of meetings have been held with<br />

Aboriginal elders. <strong>Council</strong> business units are<br />

progressing through actions in the Reconciliation<br />

Action Plan 2015–19. <strong>Council</strong> officers met with<br />

Latrobe City, South Gippsland <strong>Shire</strong> and City of<br />

Casey councils to discuss the sharing of<br />

resources, networking opportunities and<br />

to explore the potential of an Aboriginal<br />

Development Collaboration.<br />

<strong>Council</strong> facilitated a series of five educational<br />

workshops with Resilient Melbourne with both<br />

internal <strong>Council</strong> staff and external stakeholders.<br />

This included training in resilience fundamentals as<br />

well as mapping and applying Resilient Melbourne<br />

strategies into our work. This training will be applied<br />

in a pilot project in Upper Beaconsfield. <strong>Council</strong> held<br />

a Community Emergency Resilience Forum in May<br />

20<strong>18</strong>, which promoted the benefits of resilience<br />

in communities for emergencies. Over 80 people<br />

attended with key guest speakers from Emergency<br />

Management Victoria, State Emergency Services<br />

and the Department of Environment, Land, Water<br />

and Planning.<br />

Recognise, support and promote the value of volunteerism in our communities.<br />

Host annual Mayoral volunteer reception to The volunteer reception was held in May 20<strong>18</strong>. Completed<br />

recognise and value the contribution of volunteers<br />

in our shire.<br />

Strengthen <strong>Council</strong>’s community engagement through the development, implementation and promotion of<br />

effective practices.<br />

Provide training and support to staff across<br />

the organisation regarding the Community<br />

Engagement Framework and toolkit to enhance<br />

the community’s participation.<br />

Training and project-specific support has<br />

been provided to the organisation through the<br />

Community Engagement Facilitator role and the<br />

Community Development team. This includes the<br />

provision of a policy and a handbook, and has<br />

supported thirty project and policy developments.<br />
