EMERGENCE<br />

THE DAJJAL WILL EMERGE from the direction <strong>of</strong> the<br />

East, from Khurasan 1 , from (the city <strong>of</strong>) al-Yahud!Jah <strong>of</strong><br />

Asbahan 2 . <strong>The</strong>n he will travel throughout the earth, not<br />

leave any town or city, except that he will enter it, apart from<br />

Makkah and Madinah. For, he will be unable to enter them, because<br />

(at their entrances will be) angels are constantly guarding<br />

Khurasiin: are vast lands in the direction <strong>of</strong> the East, incorporating many<br />

lands, from them, Naysabur, Hurah, Marw and other cities situated beneath the<br />

TN: Khurasan, also spelled Khorasan, is a historical region and realm<br />

comprising a vast territory now lying in northeastern Iran, southern Turkmenistan,<br />

and northern Afghanistan. <strong>The</strong> historical region extended, along the north,<br />

from the Amu Darya (Oxus River) westward to the Caspian Sea and, along the<br />

south, from the fringes <strong>of</strong> the central Iranian deserts eastward to the mountains<br />

Asbahan: Yaqut says, 'the city <strong>of</strong> Asbahan is at the well-known place <strong>of</strong> (Jee),<br />

which is now known as Sharastan and al-Madinah.<br />

When Buqtansar traveled to and seized Jerusalem, he captured its inhabitants,<br />

transported the Jews with him and lodged them in Asbahan. <strong>The</strong>re he built for<br />

them quartes and camps on the outskirts <strong>of</strong> the city <strong>of</strong> Jee, which (since then) is<br />

called al-Yahiid[yah. <strong>The</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Asbahan today, is al-Yahiidiyah.' See 'Mu;am ul­<br />
