Pre-engineering students must complete at least 24 units while at the College, at most two<br />

of which can be Exploration terms. Students must also complete their engineering degree<br />

at the cooperating institution in order to receive their degree from Birmingham-Southern<br />

College. Students who do not complete the degree requirements elsewhere will not<br />

receive a degree from the College unless they return and complete the requirements for<br />

another major as well as the remaining graduation requirements.<br />

Dual Degree with Other ABET Accredited Institutions<br />

Students who participate in the pre-engineering dual degree program attend Birmingham-<br />

Southern College for a portion of their degree and then continue their education at an<br />

ABET accredited institution. After completing the academic requirements at both schools<br />

(including the possibility of additional general education or other requirements), the<br />

student is awarded a bachelor’s degree from Birmingham-Southern College and the<br />

ABET accredited institution.<br />

Students must complete the pre-engineering courses identified in the previous section.<br />

Pre-engineering students must also meet Birmingham-Southern College’s general<br />

education graduation requirements (including all required lecture and arts events credits),<br />

with the exception of the senior capstone requirement.<br />

Pre-engineering students must complete at least 24 units while at Birmingham-Southern<br />

Birmingham-Southern College. Students who do not complete the degree requirements at<br />

the ABET institution will not receive a degree from Birmingham-Southern College<br />

unless they return and complete the requirements for another major as well as the<br />

remaining graduation requirements.<br />

The degree from the ABET institution must be in a major approved by a pre-engineering<br />

advisor prior to the student transferring to the ABET institution.<br />

Dual Degree in Environmental Studies<br />

Students who participate in this dual degree program attend Birmingham-Southern<br />

College for a portion of their degree with completion achieved at Duke University. After<br />

successfully completing the first year of study at Duke University, students are awarded a<br />

bachelor’s degree from Birmingham-Southern College. Upon successful completion of<br />

the Duke University program, students are awarded either a Master of Forestry (M.F.) or<br />

Master of Environmental Management (M.E.M.) degree. While at Birmingham-Southern<br />

College, students in the dual degree program major in either biology/environmental<br />

studies or chemistry/environmental studies.<br />
