AR 499 Senior Project in Art (1)<br />
Second component of the Senior Capstone experience for the Bachelor of Fine Arts<br />
degree in studio art. The B.F.A. candidate will complete the approved contract proposed<br />
at the conclusion of AR 471. This capstone experience is evaluated by the studio art<br />
faculty. Prerequisite: AR 471. Exploration term.<br />
ARB - Arabic<br />
ARB 101 Elementary Arabic I (1)<br />
An introduction to the sounds and structure of Arabic language and its varieties (formal<br />
and colloquial), as well as to the culture of Arabic-speaking peoples. Skills emphasized<br />
are reading, writing, speaking, and oral comprehension. Instructor consent required.<br />
ARB 102 Elementary Arabic II (1)<br />
A continuation of ARB 101 with special focus on mastering basic communication skills<br />
as well as addressing the different cultural aspects of the Arabic-speaking world.<br />
Prerequisite: ARB 101.<br />
ARB 155 ES Black and Arab? (1)<br />
An examination of the historical and political processes through which the terms “Arab”<br />
and “black” sometimes converge and at other times diverge from each other by those<br />
groups living within or outside the borders of the Arabic-speaking world. Using films,<br />
literary texts, music, and folktales produced in the Arabic world, the course invites<br />
students to think critically about the changing modes of conceiving and representing<br />
“black” and “Arab” people and cultures with a focus on gender and sexual difference. An<br />
Explorations in Scholarship designated course.<br />
ARB 177, 277, 377, 477 Special Topics in Arabic Studies (1)<br />
An exploration of a selected topic or problem in Arabic studies. Taught in English.<br />
ARB 190 Intensive Elementary Arabic (2)<br />
A combination of ARB 101 and ARB 102. Students will learn to read, write, speak, and<br />
comprehend Modern Standard Arabic, and will be introduced to elementary aspects of<br />
Egyptian and Syrian dialects as well as Arabic cultures in general. Not open to students<br />
who have completed ARB 101 and ARB 102. Summer.<br />
ARB 201 Intermediate Arabic I (1)<br />
A course that reviews basic grammar and pronunciation concepts from Elementary<br />
Arabic, builds more vocabulary, and further develops language skills, with focus on<br />
additional exposure to Arabic culture and traditions. Prerequisite: ARB 102 or ARB 190.<br />
ARB 202 Intermediate Arabic II (1)<br />
An introduction to more complex grammatical structures and solidification of vocabulary<br />
to perfect the use of formal or Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). Extensive exposure to<br />
