Teacher Education Program requirements at Birmingham-Southern College are subject to<br />

change from the Alabama State Department of Education without notice. This includes<br />

requirements for entrance into the Teacher Education Program, continuation in the<br />

Teacher Education Program, program completion, and recommendation for certification.<br />

Remedial courses may not be used to meet approved program requirements.<br />

A candidate cannot be recommended for certification based on completion of a program<br />

for which State approval expired more than seven years prior to the date of program<br />

completion.<br />

Eligibility for the Teacher Education Program<br />

Students pursuing teaching certification must apply and be admitted to the Teacher<br />

Education Program (TEP). Application forms include a self-evaluation.<br />

The criteria/requirements for admission to and continuation in the Teacher Education<br />

Program are as follows:<br />

(1) Completion of at least 10 units of credit or the equivalent.<br />

(2) A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.750, a minimum <strong>BSC</strong> grade point<br />

average of 2.750, a minimum professional studies grade point average of 2.750, and a<br />

minimum teaching field grade point average of 2.750. Grades of “C” or higher in all<br />

courses in professional studies (ED, EPY). A grade of “C-” is not acceptable.<br />

(3) Successful interview and ePortfolio review with two or more members of the faculty.<br />

(4) Submission of a writing sample (see certification officer for details).<br />

(5) Evidence of teaching aptitude as demonstrated by successful completion of ED 299,<br />

and ED 201 or EPY 260.<br />

(6) A minimum passing score on all sections of the Core Praxis Assessment Test (scores<br />

must be received prior to TEP admission).<br />

(7) A minimum passing score on all sections of the Elementary Education Multi-Subject<br />

Praxis Test (scores must be received prior to TEP admission).<br />

(8) Successful completion of fingerprinting for background review.<br />

Field Experiences and Internship<br />

Students enrolled in the Teacher Education Program participate in three levels of field<br />

experiences. The first level involves primarily observation, typically done in education<br />

courses at the 200 level and/or exploratory experiences during the Exploration term. The<br />
