HI 309 Women of the American South (1)<br />
A study of women from the American South from pre-colonial contact to the present.<br />
Emphasis is placed on the contributions of women to the economic, political, social, and<br />
cultural development of the region. Among the topics covered are Native American<br />
women, slavery, Confederate states, mountain communities, Civil Rights, and country<br />
music. A Leadership Studies designated course. Prerequisite: HI 300 or instructor<br />
consent.<br />
HI 320 America Since 1940 (1)<br />
The transformation of the United States since 1940, with emphasis upon the political and<br />
social aftermath of World War II, the expansion of the American economy in the 1950s<br />
and 1960s, social movements of the 1960s, and the era of disillusionment following<br />
Vietnam and Watergate in the 1970s. Prerequisite: HI 300 or instructor consent.<br />
HI 331 Alabama Civil Rights (1)<br />
An investigation of Alabama’s role in the modern civil rights struggle. Topics include the<br />
Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Freedom Rides, the Birmingham campaign, “Bloody<br />
Sunday” and the Voting Rights Act, and the movement in rural Alabama. Prerequisite:<br />
HI 300 or instructor consent.<br />
HI 342 French Revolution and Napoleon (1)<br />
Analysis of the causes and course of the Revolution in France and the spread of<br />
revolutionary ideas and institutions in Europe, 1789-1815. Prerequisite: HI 300 or<br />
instructor consent.<br />
HI 345 Topics in the History of Terrorism (1)<br />
An exploration of terrorism through focused study of four to six episodes in its history.<br />
Following an historical and methodological introduction, possible subjects include the<br />
Sicarii, the Carbonari, Russian revolutionary terrorism, the Ku Klux Klan, the Irish<br />
Troubles, Israel/Palestine, the Malayan Emergency, the Weather Underground, antiabortion<br />
violence, eco-terrorism, and September 11. A Leadership Studies designated<br />
course. Prerequisite: HI 300 or instructor consent.<br />
HI 346 Russia in the Twentieth Century (1)<br />
A study of Russia and its transition in the twentieth century from a backward behemoth<br />
to the world’s first socialist state and finally to a struggling post-communist nation.<br />
Topics include the crises of late Imperial Russia, the Russian Revolution, Stalinism,<br />
official and popular culture in the Soviet Union, the construction of “mature socialism,”<br />
and the collapse of the U.S.S.R. Prerequisite: HI 300 or instructor consent.<br />
HI 347 Britain in the Twentieth Century (1)<br />
Transition from empire to commonwealth, the Irish problem, two world wars and their<br />
