CH 101 SM Introductory Chemistry (1)<br />

An introduction to the fundamental principles of chemistry and the importance of<br />

chemistry in modern life. Three lectures and one three-hour laboratory per week. A<br />

Scientific Methodologies designated course. Summer.<br />

CH 110 Quantitative Skills for Physical Sciences (½)<br />

An introduction to the fundamental skills in physical sciences including terminology,<br />

dimensional analysis, scientific notation, quantitative analysis, atomic structure,<br />

stoichiometry, classifying reactions, and gas laws. This course is designed for students<br />

who need to improve their background before taking General Chemistry or General<br />

Physics. One lecture per week. (Also listed as PH 110.)<br />

CH 120 SM General Chemistry (1)<br />

A study of atomic theory, chemical bonding, periodic trends, molecular shapes,<br />

thermodynamics, kinetics, and equilibrium. Three lectures and one three-hour laboratory<br />

per week. A Scientific Methodologies designated course. Prerequisite: CH 110 or passing<br />

score on chemistry placement exam. Fall, Spring.<br />

CH 149 ES, SM Chemical Principles (1)<br />

A course covering advanced topics in atomic theory, equilibria, thermodynamics, and<br />

kinetics, as well as an introduction to organic and biochemistry. Three lectures and one<br />

three-hour laboratory per week. An Explorations in Scholarship and Scientific<br />

Methodologies designated course. Prerequisite: AP score of 4 or placement. Fall.<br />

CH 177, 277, 377, 477 Special Topics in Chemistry (1)<br />

An exploration of a selected topic or problem in chemistry.<br />

CH 211 Organic Chemistry I (1)<br />

An introduction to structure and modern theory of organic compounds. Laboratory work<br />

includes preparation, purification, and structure determination of these compounds. Three<br />

lectures and one three-hour laboratory per week. Prerequisite: CH 120 or CH 149. Fall.<br />

CH 212 Organic Chemistry II (1)<br />

A continuation of CH 211 with emphasis on aromatic organic compounds, spectroscopy,<br />

and carbonyl chemistry. Three lectures and one three-hour laboratory per week.<br />

Prerequisite: CH 211. Spring.<br />

CH 220 Equilibrium and Analysis (1)<br />

An examination of properties of mixtures, oxidation-reduction, electrochemistry, and<br />

advanced equilibria. In addition, the theory and practice of volumetric, gravimetric, and<br />
