to all majors. Global and international engagement and awareness is fundamental to a<br />

liberal arts education and serves as the primary focus of the Sklenar Center. All students<br />

should have the opportunity to travel and study abroad, to meet people of other cultures,<br />

and develop intercultural competencies. Toward this end, the study abroad programs in<br />

the Sklenar Center include regular-term exchange programs, as well as internships,<br />

research, and group travel projects overseas during the summer and January terms.<br />

The Sklenar Center advises and supports all students, faculty, and staff interested in<br />

international opportunities. The Center supports student applications to internationally<br />

focused scholarships and fellowships, and serves as Fulbright Scholar Program Liaison<br />

for faculty and staff. Students with an interest in government relations, foreign service, or<br />

federally identified critical languages should contact the Sklenar Center to identify<br />

relevant opportunities.<br />

Study Abroad/Exchange<br />

All students are encouraged to study abroad. The Sklenar Center supports students<br />

through all phrases of travel, including pre-departure and re-entry. The College maintains<br />

exchange agreements with institutions in all regions of the world. Need and merit aid are<br />

available for students participating in College-sponsored programs. Contact the associate<br />

director for additional information on programs eligible for financial support.<br />

Students who participate in study abroad/exchange must meet the following<br />

requirements:<br />

(1) maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.500 or higher if required by the host<br />

institution<br />

(2) comply with Sklenar Center and host institution deadlines for program application<br />

and scholarships<br />

(3) complete a study abroad transient pre-approval form prior to enrollment at the host<br />

institution and an enrollment verification form once matriculated<br />

(4) complete Pre-Departure Topics for Study Abroad (IS 101)<br />

(5) remain enrolled full time and in good standing while studying abroad<br />

(6) complete a re-entry evaluation and provide an official transcript from the host<br />

institution<br />

Study Abroad Credit<br />

To receive credit at Birmingham-Southern College for courses taken abroad, students<br />

must earn a grade of “C” or better in the courses taken abroad and have completed the<br />

study abroad transient approval form. Upon completion of a study abroad program,<br />
