EH 300 WR Theories and Methods of Literary Analysis (1)<br />

An introduction to the discipline of literary study for English majors. This course<br />

prepares students for advanced work in textual analysis, the application of critical and<br />

theoretical approaches, and the production of well-researched literary analyses. At least<br />

one previous EH course is recommended. A Writing Reinforcement designated course.<br />

EH 301 Fiction Workshop (1)<br />

The writing of original short prose fiction taught by the workshop method. The course<br />

may be repeated once for credit. Prerequisite: EH 205.<br />

EH 302 Poetry Workshop (1)<br />

The writing of original short poetry taught by the workshop method. The course may be<br />

repeated once for credit. Prerequisite: EH 205.<br />

EH 303 Advanced Prose Workshop (1)<br />

Study of and practice in the development of style in writing, with general and<br />

professional applications. With the permission of the English faculty, students may enroll<br />

more than once for credit, providing that the focus of the course is different. Prerequisite:<br />

any 200-level writing course.<br />

EH 305 Journalism Workshop (1)<br />

Reading and practice in forms of journalism, including literary journalism, arts reviews,<br />

feature writing, editorials, and interviewing. Prerequisite: EH 204 or EH 208.<br />

EH 325 Natural, Wild, and Free: American Environmental Literature (1)<br />

An investigation of American environmental literature and nature writing. The course<br />

gives particular attention to literature and film that examine the consequences of human<br />

activity on natural systems and engage in conversations about human connections to the<br />

environment, nature, wilderness, conservation, and preservation. Prerequisite: EH 102 or<br />

EH 208.<br />

EH 329 Slavery and the Literary Imagination (1)<br />

An exploration of American slavery through literary representations of the “peculiar<br />

institution.” The course focuses first on pre-1900 works, including slave narratives,<br />

abolitionist fiction, and post-bellum recasting of the institution by southern apologists.<br />

Then students read a variety of modern writers trying to come to terms with the legacy of<br />

slavery and employing literary forms unimaginable to their nineteenth-century<br />

counterparts. Prerequisite: any 200-level literature course. (Category 1)<br />

EH 330 Major Authors (1)<br />

A focused study of the works of one to three authors. Recent offerings have included<br />

Dante, Hawthorne, Hemingway, Morrison, Woolf, and Yeats. With the permission of the<br />

English faculty, students may enroll more than once for credit, providing that the focus of<br />

the course is different. Prerequisite: any 200-level literature course. (Category 2)<br />
