As we can see, the largest numbers of Travellers are living in the Letterkenny
area, accounting for 58% of all Travellers in the county. However we can also
see that Travellers are living in many different areas throughout the county.
3. Methodology
In developing this strategic plan, the Donegal CDB IAG on Traveller Issues
commissioned Claire Galligan Consultants to undertake a research report to
inform the development of this plan. This research compiled and reviewed
current research and policy in relation to Travellers and set out the current
range of services available to Travellers in Donegal. In addition this research
was informed by three focus groups: two with members of the Traveller
community and one with service providers and presented a detailed analysis
of all the secondary and primary research findings. The analysis of these
findings presented key issues to be addressed in a strategic fashion by this
interagency group under the following themes: culture, accommodation,
health, education, employment and law enforcement.
This strategic plan has been informed by the findings from this research
report. Each key objective has been developed by the member organisations
of the CDB IAG on Traveller Issues in Donegal to address the issues and
challenges identified in the research. Similarly, each action has been agreed
and developed by the relevant lead agency with a view to achieving the stated
objectives and to work towards reaching the agreed shared vision of the IAG
in Donegal. This strategic plan clearly sets out how each action will be
implemented, the role of the various key partners in implementing the action
and the immediate, medium and long term indicators for the action. This plan
will be monitored on a six monthly basis with an annual review taking place at
the end of each year of the plan.
