5.5 Further Education, Training and Employment<br />

Objective 5.5: To work in an interagency basis to open education, training and<br />

employment opportunities for Travellers in <strong>Donegal</strong><br />

Rationale: High level of unemployment in Traveller community due to lack of<br />

recognised skills and low level of education and discrimination in the<br />

marketplace. Travellers feel that they have to hide their identity to get<br />

a job , Travellers men expressed an interest in gaining employmen t in<br />

vocational areas (e.g. construction, lorry driving etc.) but do not have<br />

skills.<br />

Action 5.5.1 Continue to work through the Pavee Pathways subgroup to open<br />

up opportunities for employment, training and further education<br />

for Travellers in <strong>Donegal</strong>. This includes working with Travellers,<br />

Employers and Service Providers and third level institutions to<br />

overcome barriers that currently exist.<br />

Next Steps<br />

1. Continue to convene and support Pavee Pathways and in particular the work of<br />

the recently appointed Traveller Employment Co-ordinator (TEC)<br />

2. Raise awareness among Traveller community of training educational services<br />

available and work with access officer in LYIT to improve access to educational<br />

programme.<br />

2. Set up arrangements to effectively manage funding from FAS to support work of<br />

Pavee Pathways.<br />

3. Set up arrangements to plan and steer work programme of TEC including all<br />

reporting arrangements<br />

4. Report to every meeting of CDB IAG<br />
