Once the 49993 households in County Donegal are broken down by known social-economic grouping a similar pattern almost emerges, with the largest numbers and percentages of households being headed by a Non-manual worker or white-collar worker (7244 households or 14.5%), Employers and managers (5811 or 11.6%), Manual Skilled (5584 households or 11.2%) and Semi-skilled (5001 households or 10.0%). (See Tables 10 (a) – 10 (e)). Correlation exists between a households socio-economic groupings and the likelihood of owning more than two cars In many areas, having access to at least one car is almost taken as a norm. Therefore, it was interesting to examine whether having access to a car (or cars) is dependant on a persons socio-economic grouping. Households having the highest percentages of two or more cars fell into the socio-economic groupings of employers or managers (62.8%), own account workers (62.9%), higher professionals (56.5%), farmers (52.3%) and lower professionals (48.4%). An almost identical pattern is mirrored in County Donegal with higher percentages of car ownership being evident among employers or managers (63.7%), own account workers (59.9%), higher professionals (56.5%), lower professionals (46.4%) and farmers (43.9%) Accepting that in many households circumstances it is not a necessity to own a car e.g. person may live in urban area with good access to transport facilities or places of work, when we examine the socio-economic groupings who do not have a car the highest percentages fall into the unskilled worker (33.9%), the agricultural worker (23.3%), the semi-skilled (21.5%) and the non manual (19.8%). Again, in the County Donegal example the highest socio-economic groups with no car are as follows: the unskilled worker (28.3%), the agricultural worker (25.8%), non - manual (16.6%), the semi-skilled (16.2%). (See Tables 10(a) – 10(e)). Farmers and Employer & Managers are more likely to have four or more cars In the boom times, having goods of ostentation likes four or more cars, two or more holidays a year, were signs of new found wealth so it is interesting to examine what socio-economic grouping are most likely to have four or more cars. In the State, both employers and managers, and farmers had the highest share of households with four or more cars. Likewise, in County Donegal the same pattern exists. (See Tables 10 (a) – 10 (e)). Conclusion An early indication of the economic slowdown was evident by a reduction in consumer purchasing power. This reduction or early warning signal could have been gleamed by an analysis of the number of new cars registered in the State or in the county. Over the period 2007 – 2008 the number of new cars registered in the State fell by –20.9% (51,628 cars) and in County Donegal by –25% (1,549 cars). The economy officially went into recession in 2008. Therefore, the reduction in the number of new cars registered may have implications on travel to work, school or college patterns, in favour of more green alternatives, car sharing or public transport options. Recall in County Donegal, 18.1% of households do not have a motor car and will the credit crunch ultimately exasperate this percentage e.g. difficulty in getting car loans, rising costs of running a car (fuel and insurance etc)? The new census, which will take place in 2011, will collect data on the destination of a person who is travelling to work and will ultimately enhance our understanding of traffic flows within County Donegal and in the North West Region. Nevertheless, this factsheet provides useful insights into factors that affect car ownership and travel to work, school or college patterns in County Donegal.
