Learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The cognitive side of learn<strong>in</strong>g usually gets a<br />

great deal of attention, but a tugg<strong>in</strong>g<br />

undercurrent persists. It is <strong>the</strong> doma<strong>in</strong> of<br />

emotions, <strong>the</strong> so-called affective side of learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

We all know it’s <strong>the</strong>re, but it’s commonly thought<br />

of as a distraction to learn<strong>in</strong>g. In fact, some still<br />

believe that learn<strong>in</strong>g and emotions are at opposite<br />

ends of <strong>the</strong> spectrum. It’s time for all of us to catch<br />

up on <strong>the</strong> research.<br />

Biologically, emotions are not only very current<br />

science, but also very important science. Neuroscientists<br />

are now break<strong>in</strong>g new ground <strong>in</strong> mapp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

out this important learn<strong>in</strong>g component. The affective<br />

side of learn<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>the</strong> critical <strong>in</strong>terplay between<br />

how we feel, act, and th<strong>in</strong>k. There is no separation<br />

of m<strong>in</strong>d and emotions; emotions, th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g are all l<strong>in</strong>ked. This chapter makes <strong>the</strong> case<br />

that emotions have an important and rightful place<br />

<strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong> schools.<br />

Western Culture and Emotions<br />

Western culture has had a peculiar attitude about<br />

human emotion. Though we acknowledge that<br />

emotions exist, <strong>the</strong>y have always held lower court.<br />
