FOREWORD by Air Chief Marshal Sir Christopher Foxley-Norris GCB, DSO, QBE, MA, CBIM, FRSA. As the title indicates, this autobiography is divided into two parts; the author's active service in World War II and his postwar involvement in the aviation industry and gliding. The first part of the book is largely devoted to operational flying on Typhoons in 1944-5. This story has of course been told before, but David Ince's highly graphic and gripping narration adds a new flavour. The ground attack fighter played a large, indeed a decisive part in our victory in Europe. The fact that we enjoyed air supremacy, to which the Luftwaffe's exhaustion on the Eastern Front had contributed much, enabled us to tilt the balance of victory, albeit at forbidding cost in casualties. After the war, Ince was faced with a difficult choice between a permanent commission in the RAF, which he was pressed to accept, and a career as test pilot. He chose the latter but in the event chronic sinusitis curtailed his development flying and he turned to marketing and general management, and to gliding, the latter becoming his true love. His descriptions of soaring flight, particularly in top competition, are enthralling. Less happily, his years in aviation bear witness to sharp bickering between prima donnas and vested interests; and, most notably, to the constant and deplorable interference of totally unqualified politicians such as Duncan Sandys and Healey. As long as our aircraft industry and military preparedness remain in such hands, there will be, even in more peaceful times, grave cause for anxiety. Having to some extent been involved in most of these activities, I much enjoyed this book and can strongly recommend it. rx
