And if like me you were flying the Olympia IV, with its stiff slippery wing and splendid ailerons, the temptation to ignore any passing turbulence and allow the speed to creep up to Vne5 was almost irresistible. My exuberant racing finishes must have rung a bell with Wally Kahn. Choosing his moment with care he addressed me loudly, as we were all waiting in the marquee just before briefing: "Morning David. How does it feel to be flying the fastest dining room table in the world?" Typical Wally, and fair comment, for the Olympia IV's natural elegance was greatly enhanced by its sleek and beautifully finished wings. These had been skinned in an attractively grained plywood which might have been selected as much for its appearance as its quality. Hardly surprising for Elliotts first and foremost were furniture manufacturers. I had a good Nationals lying second throughout most of the contest, until the last day, with Philip Wills unassailably in the lead, and Frank Foster close behind me. Second again, to Steve, on the final triangular race should have clinched my position. Frustratingly it didn't because at that time we dropped our worst day's score and I had failed to work the system! Even so third in the Open Individual Class was good news for the Olympia IV. Alf Warminger was competing that year. Almost our first gliding encounter since he briefed me to fly that elderly Hurricane at Peterborough more than a decade earlier. His words when we parted company at the end of the contest suggested that he too was aware of the passage of time: "That was a good contest Dave. If only it could have gone on for a fortnight. One week every two years isn't enough and we're none of us getting any younger. I wish I was twenty five again!" Good old Alf! In due course there were to be Nationals every year - with lots of Regionals as well - and he's gone on flying for ever. So perhaps by now he's had his fill! 169
